While there are plenty of advertising books out there and many different opinions on the subject, I’m going to list the 5 Deadly Advertising Mistakes Of All Time.
All of these advertising mistakes can be avoided but it’s surprising to see so many businesses fall into these advertising traps. Before you spend another advertising dollar for your business, take a look at these advertising mistakes!
Advertising Mistake #5: Stop selling your service or product and start selling THE OFFER. You have lots of competition for your product or service. Advertising the service or product just puts you in the lineup…waiting. Advertising THE OFFER makes your service or product STAND OUT. Making an offer forces the customer to take action faster and makes you stand out from your competitors.
Advertising Mistake #4: Not testing and tracking results. So many “experts” make this mistake it’s mind boggling. It doesn’t matter what type of advertising you do, you must ALWAYS track your results. How can you find your advertising mistakes if you’re not finding out where business is coming from? Even if you are advertising through direct mail you should always find out what your ROI is. ROI stands for Return on Investment.
Big companies are notorious for putting those expensive one page ads up in the Wall Street or NY Times, but there is absolutely no way of tracking the incoming business. No number specifically designed just for that one ad and no special offer to know that that one offer is tied to that one ad. That’s the type of advertising tracking you must do in order for your business to be successful.
Advertising Mistake #3: Not hiring a professional to write your copy. Some of you might be pretty decent copy writers, but the truth is you won’t be better than a seasoned copywriter.
It’s a skill and a talent to be able to write good copy. If you’ve spent good advertising dollars to advertise in a publication, website, magazine, etc., you better hire yourself a good copywriter or you might just waste all of your advertising budget. The power is in the words. Copy will always be KING to a smart business owner.
Advertising Mistake #2: Not targeting prospects. You’re guilty, even if you don’t think you are. One of the hardest things in advertising is to find your target. They might be hiding out, but they are out there in masses, oblivious to your product or service…so what are you going to do about it?
Hands down- the smartest thing you can do is to make sure you are reaching the right prospects for your business. If you don’t, you might as well use your advertising cash as toilet paper. Yep, you might want to go to the bathroom right now.
There are two problems to this advertising dilemma. The first advertising dilemma is not knowing who your audience is, but even if you have that pegged; the second advertising dilemma is simply not reaching them.
You must know your media inside and out. You need to know the media’s demographic and what they can do to help you target that specific person who will want your service or product. Take a look at some of your advertising options for the retirement industry.
Advertising Mistake #1: Not exploring your options well enough.
There’s quite a bit of advertising options out there for your business. If you haven’t had luck with something, you need to troubleshoot it. It may have just been the copy (for example the offer wasn’t right or maybe it was too good to be true), or it could be the timing, or perhaps the audience. Don’t give up. Keep exploring until you find what’s right.
